Council kills Diaz resolution opposing Arizona law
The Escondido City Council voted three to two at its May 19 meeting not to discuss two items placed on the Council agenda by member Olga Diaz. One was a proposed resolution against the Arizona “show your papers” law (S.B. 1070). The second would rescind a 2007 City resolution about discouraging illegal immigration. When the items came up for discussion, Council member Dick Daniels said that the resolution about the Arizona law conflicted with a policy that prohibits discussion or action on items not related to City of Escondido business. Daniels asked City Attorney Jeff Epp for his opinion. Epp said he interpreted the existing policy, passed in 2007, as preventing any action. Daniels moved that the item not be discussed and be removed from the agenda. Because both the new resolution and the 2007 resolution were bundled into one agenda item, both were affected.

Council member Sam Abed, who made clear he would not support the Arizona resolution, objected to Daniels’ motion, saying it was “unprecedented” that a Council member should be denied the right to bring items up for public discussion. “This is unheard of,” he said.
Daniels replied that the policy “is not a guideline. It is a rule of procedure.” Council member Marie Waldron concurred, saying “I feel we have a policy in place.”
The motion was passed, three to two, with Daniels, Pfeiler and Waldron voting for, and Diaz and Abed voting against. The item regarding the two resolutions was removed from the agenda. Pfeiler declared a 10-minute recess. Following the recess, the Council continued with the remainder of the agenda.
In emotional comments at the end of the meeting, Diaz said she thought “it was important to receive input from our community” on the issues raised by the Arizona law and that she “was hoping to hear constructive input.” She criticized S.B. 1070 for “carelessly eroding the rights of U.S. citizens” and reminded her colleagues that the 2007 Escondido ordinance that attempted to prohibit landlords from renting to illegal immigrants “taught this community an expensive lesson” that only the federal government can implement immigration law. She concluded, “I can understand the frustration with our country’s broken immigration system, but my objections to S.B. 1070 far transcend the immigration enforcement objectives it purports to address. It was my sincere hope that some of my colleagues would have stood with me against this misguided law… If I stand alone, so be it.”

Olga presented herself very well tonight. She is a strong woman and councilmember and I am proud to support her! I will definately be voting for her in 2012!
Furthermore, for the record: I stand with Olga and all others who oppose this discriminating AZ law.
I have joined Cuentame. Actor Hector Elizondo and Actress/Model Vanessa Williams are spokespeople for this movement. I encourage signing their petition, too. I plan on purchasing one of their t-shirts, if anyone is interested in buying multiples for savings. The t-shirt says: “Do I Look Illegal?”
Again, I’m proud to support Olga! I appreciate her integrity and her commitment to her job and doing what is right. Escondido is lucky to have her represent us!
And Right On! To the Escondido Democratic Club! Thanks for standing up for what is just. You are appreciated! Thank You!
Last night’s meeting was very unsettling. The level of hatred and vitriolic comments was astounding. Unfortunately, the whole question has been missed and the resultant furor focused on Olga personally.
The second part of the agenda item, to rescind the Waldorn resolution, was never addressed. The reason was that Pfiler and Daniels had voted against it when it was first passed. If it had been discussed last night they would have had to vote against it again (that is to rescind it) If that had happened that would have been seen a siding with Olga.
Daniels recognized that it would distroy him politically and that is why Abed supported Diaz, because he wanted to gouge Daniels.
All in all a disgusting display of petty politics and nothing gained.
We all have the answer to the question posed by Olga, “can we demonstrate that we have moved past the racial hatred and discrimination caused by the rental ban?”
The answer from this crowd was a resounding NO.
I totally support Olga’s ideas, but I believe that trying to make this city council to apologize to our city will never happen. What we need to do is move forward and make sure that we get Waldron out this November and make sure Gallo doesn’t get his seat back. They are the cancer to our city, and we need to remove it. I want to get our Escondido back, then we will start the healing process. Then we will stop checkpoints that target Latinos in our community. Let’s show them that we will not take it anymore. Let’s focus our energy on this November. Check out my website carmenmirandanow.com
