During remarks at the May 8 Escondido Democratic Club meeting, Escondido City Council member Olga Diaz said she will present a resolution to the Council at its May 19 meeting that puts the city on record as opposing the Arizona “show your papers” law, SB 1070. The resolution calls for a letter to Arizona Governor Jan Brewer opposing the law, Diaz said.

Diaz also announced that she will seek to rescind an Escondido resolution passed in January 2007.  The resolution, #2007-16, says the City will “address the public nuisance of illegal immigration by aggressively working to prohibit and address acts, policies, people and businesses that aid and abet illegal aliens.” The resolution was proposed by Council member Marie Waldron and supported by Council members Sam Abed and Ed Gallo. Council member Dick Daniels and Mayor Lori Holt-Pfeiler voted against it.

“This is what has flavored every policy after that point in this city,” Diaz declared, “which is what, in fact, has tainted the drivers license checkpoints with the image of being racially motivated.” Diaz asked for supporters of both actions to attend the May 19 Council meeting. “I am spending what people call political capital and I don’t collect political capital. I have to be the person taking a stand for what is right even if I’m the only one standing.”
