Health Care Activists Take Message to Bilbray

by Chris Nava

A highly successful rally in support of Single Payer and Public Option outside Congressman Brian Bilbray’s office in Solana Beach last Thursday drew the attention of the local media. KUSI and Fox News TV crews covered the event, as some of the local papers. The rally brought together groups from PDA, the San Diego single payer Coalition, OFA, DFA and Health Care Now in a show of strength for reform.

The energetic group carrying colorful signs lined Stevens Ave. in Solana Beach during the noon hour and drew the attention, and at times, support of those driving on Stevens Ave. EDC’s members Judy Slane and Chris Nava participated in the rally and took the opportunity to visit Bilbray’s office and deliver a letter Chris had written to be delivered to Bilbray. Chris also took the opportunity to ask, again, for a schedule of the Congressman’s town hall meetings or public appearances during the August recess.

Once again the request was greeted with “we don’t have one at this time”. The receptionist was reminded that this is a response Chris has heard time and time again. The well-trained receptionist only repeated that they do not have one. The issue of non-response to requests for a meeting with the Congressman and or with the aide in charge of health care was also raised. The office was not aware of the request!

As Chris and Judy left the office, they both simultaneously noticed the large TV screen in the reception area which was tuned to “guess what?” FOX NEWS!
